GambleAware Examines the Interplay of Mental Health and Gambling Harm

GambleAware has released its recent study delving into the intricate relationship between mental health and gambling-related harm. Conducted by Alma Economics on behalf of GambleAware, the study utilized data from GambleAware's comprehensive Annual GB Treatment and Support Survey.

The research indicates a statistically significant correlation, suggesting that gambling harm contributes to the deterioration of mental health. The severity of an individual's gambling habits is measured by the Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI).

According to GambleAware and Alma Economics, as the PGSI score increases, so does the likelihood of the person experiencing mental health issues. The study revealed that individuals diagnosed with the most severe gambling harm, categorized as PGSI 8+ on the scale, are also the most prone to severe mental health conditions, accounting for 47% of this group.

Even individuals ranking PGSI 1+ on the same scale are four times more likely than non-gamblers to experience some form of mental health distress. Suicidal thoughts were found to be a common concern, with 26% of PGSI 1+ individuals reporting such thoughts, compared to 6% of non-gamblers.

Zoë Osmond, Chief Executive of GambleAware, highlighted the significance of this research for medical practitioners and gambling support organizations. She emphasized that understanding the causal relationship could pave the way for tailored and effective treatment plans.

Osmond stated, "Depending on what mental health condition a person is suffering from, they may get the appropriate help they need to move past both problem gambling and their mental distress." It is crucial to recognize that the impact of mental health issues related to gambling extends beyond the individual, affecting immediate family and social circles.

The findings suggest that gambling harms not only affect the individual directly but also have implications for the mental health of those around them. Alma Economics Managing Director Nick Spyropoulos expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the importance of these findings in enhancing understanding of the link between gambling harm and mental health.

Spyropoulos noted, "This research can help us learn more about the link between gambling harms and poor mental health and what can be done to help people receive the support they need going forward." The research also suggests a potential two-way relationship, with individuals experiencing mental health problems turning to gambling, and, conversely, gambling leading to more aggressive and risky behaviors.
